How to get ready for a Renaissance Festival

How to get ready for a Renaissance Festival

You know that feeling, right? That buzz of excitement when you think about stepping back in time, even just for a day. For me, that feeling started way back in high school when my drama club friend, Bethany, first invited me to the Renaissance faire. It sounded like the most amazing thing in the world, but there was one crucial hurdle: I needed a costume! With Bethany's help and her parents' experience, I whipped up a simple costume. I'd already been sewing for years, so with a little instruction and some help with patterns, it wasn't a big deal. Bethany regaled me with tales of her adventures, and I even learned to put plastic cross-stitch canvas in my bodice to stiffen it!

It's been many years since that first faire, but I still get just as excited every time I get ready to attend or be part of a festival. If you're planning your own trip back in time, here are a few tips to make sure you have the most amazing day possible.

Dress for Success (and Comfort!)

This might seem obvious, but it's probably the most important thing to consider when planning your faire attire. While those heavy brocades and velvet cloaks look fantastic, they can be absolute misery on a warm day.

  • Breathable Fabrics are Your Friend: Think cotton, linen, and even lightweight wool if the weather is cooler. These natural fibers will keep you much more comfortable than synthetics.
  • Layers are Key: Weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers allows you to adjust throughout the day. A light cloak or a simple chemise under your main garment can make a big difference.
  • Comfortable Shoes, Always! You'll be doing a lot of walking, exploring, and maybe even dancing! Leave the fancy, uncomfortable footwear at home and opt for sturdy, broken-in shoes that can handle uneven terrain. Your feet will thank you later.

Prepare for the Elements

Even if you're dressed perfectly, the sun and the heat can still take their toll.

  • Sunblock is a Must: Don't let a sunburn ruin your Renaissance revelry! Apply plenty of sunblock before you go, and reapply throughout the day, especially if you're sweating.
  • Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget to drink water. Bring a reusable water bottle and fill up at designated stations, or purchase drinks regularly. Dehydration is no fun!
  • Hats Aren't Just for Show! As a milliner, I can't stress this enough! A good hat not only completes your look but also provides much-needed sun protection for your face and neck. Whether it's a simple straw hat or a more elaborate creation, wear one!

Plan Your Day (Loosely!)

While spontaneity is part of the fun, a little planning can go a long way in making sure you don't miss out on anything.

  • Review the Schedule in Advance: Most faires have a schedule of events, shows, and performances available online before the gates even open. Take a look and highlight any acts or demonstrations you absolutely want to see. This helps you prioritize your time.
  • Allow for Exploration: Don't overschedule yourself! Part of the magic of the faire is wandering through the lanes, discovering artisan shops, and stumbling upon impromptu performances. Leave plenty of time for just browsing and exploring. You never know what hidden gems you'll find!
  • Budget Your Time (and Money!): Know that lines for food, drinks, and even restrooms can get long, especially during peak hours. Factor this into your day. And if you're planning on doing some shopping, bring enough coin (or cards!) to snag those unique treasures.

Getting ready for a Renaissance faire is all about balancing historical flair with modern-day comfort and common sense. It's been many years, but I am still just as excited every time I get ready to attend or be part of a festival.
