Where do you find capotain or sugarloaf hats like the Puritans wore in 16th century?

Are you interested in historical fashion and looking to add a touch of 16th-century style to your wardrobe? Are you a reenactor, focused on specific events in history? Have you discovered it is hard to find historically accurate hat styles to compliment your historic wardrobe? It can be a challenge to find capotain or sugarloaf hats like the ones worn by the Puritans or the doomed perpetrators of the Gunpowder Plot 1605. These iconic hats with their very tall crown and wide brim are not as common in modern fashion, but there are still ways to get them on your head.

Historical Reenactment Stores

One of the best places to find authentic capotain or Puritan-style hats is at historical reenactment stores. These specialty shops cater to history enthusiasts and often carry a wide range of period-appropriate clothing and accessories. Look for stores that focus on the 16th century or specifically cater to Puritan reenactments.

Costume Shops

Another option for finding Puritan-style hats is to check out costume shops. While these hats may not be historically accurate replicas, they can still provide the look you're going for. Costume shops often carry a range of hats for different periods, making them an affordable option for those looking to dress up for a historical event or party.

Historic Hatters and Milliners like Folie Jolie

If you're looking for a truly authentic capotain-style hat, consider working with a milliner. We are skilled artisans who can create a hat to your exact specifications, ensuring that you get a high-quality, historically accurate piece. While this option may be more expensive, it allows you to own a unique and personalized hat.  At FolieJolie.com, we specialize in hat styles from the 16th and 17th centuries and have a collection of blocks in our library to create these unique hats. You can select the materials, colors, size, and trim options, making this a one-of-a-kind hat.

Here are some of our favorites:

1) A custom capotain hat inspired by a Van Gheyn woodcut. This was a past custom order for a reenactor client.  It was made with velour fur felt, silk bias brim edge, and a vintage ostrich trim.  We discussed several trim and detail options based on the client's budget and needs.

2) The Mortimer hat in dark olive fur felt. This is a ready-to-wear version, in a luxurious fur felt with crisp lines.  The brim is very wide, and curves gently just as you see in the period art.

3) A lightweight capotain straw hat for hot summer events.  The same shape, but much cooler. This is a great option if you are attending an event but want air circulation on your head.  The loose weave of the straw provides some minimal shade, but I recommend sunblock.

Whether you're a history buff, a reenactor, or simply someone with a passion for vintage fashion, finding a capotain hat can add a unique touch to your wardrobe. By exploring these different avenues, you can track down the perfect hat to complete your 16th-century look.
